Court Sides with Dictatorship and Chaos

From CDTC Chair Mike Schell:

Yesterday, the Supreme Court announced two decisions concerning the president's power to fire agency commissioners/board members.  One concerned the Federal Trade Commission and the other the Federal Reserve Board.  They are Trump v. Slaughter (FTC) and Trump v. Cook (FRB).  One overruled a 90-year precedent and permitted the firing of an FTC Commissioner.  The other decision denied authorization for firing a member of the Federal Reserve Board.  I believe there is no principled distinction to rationalize the two different results. Essentially that issue is one of the key differences between the Court's opinion (Roberts) and the dissent (Sotomayor, joined by Kagan and Jackson).  However, a more fundamental problem exists with these decisions.  To see the problem, you should either watch or read Paul Krugman's assessment.  It is worrisome at best and potentially devastating.
