Barnstable county assembly of delegates
The Assembly of Delegates is the legislative branch of the Barnstable County government, and its members are responsible for adopting new legislation (ordinances) for the County. The Assembly was formed in 1989 when the Barnstable County Home Rule Charter went into effect. There are 15 Delegates in the Assembly, and there is 1 Delegate for each of the 15 towns on the Cape. The Assembly uses a weighted voting system in which each Delegate is weighted based on Town population (per census data, adjusted every 10 years). In this system, the Town of Barnstable has the largest weighted vote (20.92%) and Truro has the smallest vote (0.93%). Chatham's vote is 2.84%. County Delegates serve 2-year terms and are elected on the same ballot as the MA legislature. This means that all 15 seats in the Assembly are up for election every 2 years. The Assembly meets the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month in Barnstable, MA.

The Select Board leads the executive branch of the government in the Town of Chatham, MA. Its responsibilities include serving as the Town's primary policy-making body, calling Town Meetings and approving the Town Meeting warrant. There are 5 members representing the Town at large.
